Terra Preta in Action – Midseason Insights
Dr. Paulette Steeves (Algoma University) shares midseason insights from our Terra Preta project at the Kinoomaagewin site north of Thessalon, Ontario. This research explores how charcoal, compost, pottery, and natural materials inspired by the ancient Indigenous “black earth” soils of the Amazon can enhance soil health, crop yield, and food security in Northern communities. The project compares Terra Preta soil mixes with conventional soils to measure yield, taste, and nutrient differences. Early observations show larger, healthier crops grown in Terra Preta soils, offering exciting potential for community food production and climate resilience in the North.
